The seaside resort of Blackpool sits midway along the north western coastline of England, between Liverpool and the Lake District. With the Yorkshire Dales to the north east, and the Peak District to the south east, all of it surrounding the conurbations of some of the great Northern cities, this region is particularly popular with holidaymakers.

Things to do in Blackpool and the North West
Blackpool is one of the leading family seaside resorts in the UK and its world-famous Pleasure Beach welcomes over six and a half million visitors each year. Situated on the North West coast, looking out across the Irish Sea, Blackpool makes a perfect centre for exploring the North West. The miles of unspoilt sandy beaches mean that Blackpool is a great location for a gentle stroll or impromptu picnic. In addition to the joys of the Blackpool Tower and the Golden Mile of the town’s promenade, each Autumn, Blackpool treats visitors to the sixty-six day light festival known as the ‘Blackpool Illuminations’.

To the immediate south of Blackpool, the towns of Lytham St Annes and Southport offer slightly more sedate and stylish amusements, with the nearby Ribble Estuary, a recognised SSSI, hosting up to a quarter of a million birds at any one time; whilst in the environs of Lytham four championship golf courses present players with both challenging fairways and welcoming clubhouses. The villages of the Fylde offer peaceful hamlets and canal-side life in the most beautiful of rural settings.

    Top Destinations

Carnforth – Rich in railway and ironwork history, with vast local deposits of limestone making it an ideal place for ironworks, the small town of Carnforth still attracts visitors to its iconic railway station, which was used as a set for the 1945 film Brief Encounter.

Grange over Sands – The advent of the Furness Railway transformed this former fishing village into a fashionable Victorian resort, and the tone of the town as a model of municipal design is retained to this day, with a fine promenade, ornamental gardens and award-winning tea shops.

Kirkham – This market town, and the largest of the rural towns of Fylde, pre-dates the Norman Conquest, with the historic parish church of St Michael’s believed to date back to 608AD.

Morecambe Bay – The famous and unique walk across the Bay covers about eight and half miles, starting at Arnside and ending on Kents Back. The traditional course of the trail was once considerably longer, commencing further around the bay at Hesk Bank, but in recent years it has been curtailed for reasons of safety, as the local tides are incredibly dangerous, and quick sand is an added hazard; all walkers must be accompanied by an experienced local guide.

Whittle-le-Woods – This South Ribble town just outside Preston is the site of the largest temple in the UK for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). Meanwhile, just over a mile away from the main town, the hamlet of Whittle Springs sits at the junction of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, and at the beginning of an impressive series (or flight) of canal locks, known as Johnson’s Hillock Locks.

Settle – A bustling market town in the foothills of the Pennines, beside the largest outcrop of limestone in Britain, Settle is a popular base for exploring the Yorkshire Dales.
