Referred to by DH Lawrence as ‘like being at a window and looking out of England’ for its wonderful coastal views, Cornwall also boasts a stunning rural interior. The countryside of Central Cornwall includes the West Country’s smallest and most accessible great moor; Bodmin Moor has beautiful tors, torrents and rock formations, although the wealth of Bronze Age relics and the fine fifteenth century churches demonstrate the strong human imprint made on the local environment.
Things to do in Cornwall
The Eden Project, a series of iconic, domed greenhouse microclimate structures just outside St Austell, has transformed a disused clay mine into a rich, global garden, featuring over a million plants from a wide variety of climates.
The Royal Cornwall Museum in Truro holds an eclectic mixture of objects, including items from Egyptology, classical Greek and Roman history, fine art and world cultures. However, local items are also to the fore, such as a world-famous collection of minerals and a large gold nugget discovered at Perranarworthal.
The Trewithen estate near Truro boasts one of the loveliest gardens in England, and is internationally renowned for its collection of magnolias and camellias. The estate is also the site of some fine woodland walks and an 18th century estate house, as well as the obligatory tea shop and plant nursery.
Top Destinations
Launceston - Known by some as the ‘gateway to Cornwall’, Launceston is a quintessential Cornish market town, with narrow mediaeval streets dominated by an imposing Norman castle.
Liskeard - An ancient market town, 20 miles west of Plymouth, at the head of the Looe valley, Liskeard is one of the few remaining towns in the county to have a weekly livestock market each Thursday, as well as a fine selection of local shops selling regional produce.
Bodmin - Formally the county town and, until the building of Truro Cathedral, the site of the largest church in the county, Bodmin lies to the southwest of Bodmin Moor, equidistant from the north and south coasts and the Fowey and Camel rivers. Bodmin is also one of the oldest towns in Cornwall, and the only large Cornish settlement to be recorded in the late eleventh century Domesday Book. Bodmin’s most prominent landmark is the Gilbert Memorial, a 144ft obelisk positioned on Bodmin Beacon, honouring a descent of Sir Walter Raleigh.
St Mellion - This fine rural hamlet is the site of the church of St Melanus, and of the Pentillie 17th century castle and estate.
Truro - Cornwall’s administrative centre, and home to her only cathedral, this bustling city is also the centre of tourism and commerce for the county, and the skyline is dominated by a marvellous gothic revival cathedral, with its three soaring spires and fine stained glass.
