Buried in the churchyard, so villagers say, is a princess, believed to be Bonnie Prince Charlie's illegitimate daughter. The village is surrounded by scenic trails and footpaths leading to pretty tarns including High Dam, perfect for a picnic or paddle in the summer. At nearby Lakeside steamers offer trips to Windermere and Ambleside calling at Lakeside towns and villages and at Fellfoot Park where you can enjoy the gardens which sweep down to the lake shore where you can hire small boats. Leafy lanes lead to local hostelries where good food can be enjoyed.
