 High House
Dunster, Somerset.,United Kingdom
This superb house is set in a prime position in the pretty, medieval village of Dunster, just a stone's throw from the castle (NT). Amidst a breathtaking setting which inspired the hymn All Things Bright and Beautiful, it provides romantic accommodation - each room boasts wonderful furnishings, and there is some splendid artwork on show. Its impressive `Armada' bedroom has beams made from ships wrecked during the Spanish Armada. All in all, High House offers a timeless country house atmosphere. Complete with a secluded, walled garden and croquet lawn, through a private gate leads into Dunster Castle's grounds where visitors can enjoy a picnic by the river or a walk to Dunster beach. To enrich their stay, guests also have the chance to enjoy the services of a masseur to Wimbledon champions by prior arrangement. Exmoor is on the doorstep, with the beaches at Blue Anchor, Dunster and Minehead all nearby. The coastline's stunning scenery, cliffs, woods and moorland, make this area a walkers' paradise. It is set amidst an area rich in red deer, heather and clean air, with many pretty villages to charm - pony-trekking is available. Taunton has a castle, started on the 12th century, which now houses the County Museum, as well as two 15th-century churches which overlook the county cricket ground. Dunster offers guests many choices of pubs and restaurants, interesting shops and a pottery. The main street is dominated by the towers and turrets of Dunster Castle, whose grounds include terraced gardens and riverside walks. Minehead (2miles) provides visitors with all the amenities of a modern seaside resort, from golf to a steam railway. The South West Coast Path, the longest footpath in Britain, starts at Minehead and follows the coastline along Devon's northern seaboard, round Cornwall, back into Devon and on to Dorset - a trip of 600miles which finishes near Poole Harbour.
