Mullion Cove, Cornwall.,United Kingdom
Within 2miles of three sandy beaches and commanding magnificent coastal and country views from its elevated position , this spacious, very comfortable and well-equipped detached house is tucked away peacefully along a track. Set in its own private 1½acres of grounds and garden, a haven for wildlife, it is only a 10-minute walk down to the enchanting harbour of Mullion Cove, now in the care of the National Trust. A natural tunnel through the greenstone rock leads at low tide to a little sandy beach. There are glorious cliff walks leading to a further series of sandy beaches, or southwards through part of the Lizard National Nature Reserve, where a wide range of heathland and cliff-top plants may be seen, and sea-birds include kittiwakes, guillemots, razorbills and shags. The clear water offshore attracts divers, and surfboards are for hire in several coves. Mullion (1mile) is one of the largest villages on the Lizard Peninsula, with shops, banks, several inns and restaurants, and a golf course; at nearby Angrouse several ancient barrows have been opened to disclose prehistoric artefacts, now on display in the Truro Museum. Five miles away is the National Trust's Penrose Estate, at the centre of which is a freshwater lake more than a mile long, and miles of paths wind through delightful woodland. The market town of Helston (10miles) has good facilities for visitors, including tennis courts, putting and bowling greens, cinema, swimming-pool and famous Blue Anchor pub, which brews its own beer. Nature lovers will find a great deal of interest in this area. On the eastern side of the peninsula, around the estuary of the Helford River, there are some beautiful gardens to visit. Glendurgan Gardens (NT) has a magnificent collection of rhododendrons, camellias and magnolias, as well as tree ferns and bananas which flourish in the wonderfully mild climate of this region. At nearby Gweek is the National Seal Sanctuary which cares for rescued seals. Within easy reach is Penzance, with regular trips to the Isles of Scilly, and charming StIves, famous for its art galleries. Land's End can be reached in an hour or so. Gliding is available locally.
