 The Old Manor House
Appleby, Cumbria.,United Kingdom
For walkers, fly fishermen and golfers, this is a paradise which lies close to the River Eden. Dating from the 14th-century, The Old Manor is completely self-contained and is the oldest wing of Crackenthorpe Hall. The adjacent Victorian wing, `The Old Hall', is also available for holiday bookings . The owners live discreetly in a small wing of the house. The Old Manor is a period country house with much character. It stands in 10acres of beautiful shared grounds with access to the Eden, where fly-fishing and/or tuition is available (at cost) along approximately 2miles of the river. The house is steeped in history including associations with King Henry VI, who took refuge here, living incognito disguised as a gardener; and legend tells the story of its troublesome ghost, now buried in the river under `Peg's Stone'. The Eden Valley offers wonderfully peaceful countryside in which to relax. Nearby is attractive Appleby (2miles) with its historic castle, country shops, inns and restaurants, 18-hole golf course and swimming-pool. Pony-trekking, tennis and riding available locally. Easily reached is Ullswater (20minutes' drive) and the Lake District. Pennine Way - 4minutes' drive, with the Yorkshire Dales close at hand. Penrith 11miles.
Spacious living room with wood-burning stove and large dining-room with open fire - each with rugs on wooden floor. Farmhouse-style kitchen with door to garden. First floor: Double bedroom (once used by Henry VI) with additional TV, and adjoining door to twin-bedded room - also accessed via landing. Further twin-bedded room. Two bathroom/W.C.s (one with over-bath shower). Steep stairs to second floor: Three bedrooms; one double and two twin-bedded. Bathroom/W.C. with over-bath shower. Most bedrooms with wash basins.
