The Hayloft

Etchingham, East Sussex.,United Kingdom

``A romantic setting with outstanding views across the Kent/Sussex border...a secret garden leads to meadows and woodland walk...''

Nestling within the stunning grounds of the owner's country mansion lies Old Granary Barn, located on the Sussex and Kent border between Etchingham and Ticehurst in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. According to the legend, King John II, who became King of France in 1350, was taken hostage by the Black Prince and was held prisoner in this imposing historic house for some years before he died in 1364 in the Tower of London. Old Granary Barn stands in a secluded part of the superb eight-acre gardens, which have been featured in magazines and other publications to allow others to see its beauty - a romantic setting where one can stroll in the formal garden with its fountian and ornate lily pond, the wild garden which blossoms in Spring and Summer and a bridge leading to the Ivy Garden. There is even a secret garden leading to a woodland walk and meadow, and a tree-lined path leading to shaded seating. Sheep graze in the fields surrounding the barn, and outstanding views can also be savoured. There is an outdoor heated swimming-pool (available mid May to mid September) with seating area, a gently sloping garden with picnic benches and a hard tennis court. Within the main gardens there is also a croquet lawn and further seating area, both shared with guests visiting the main house. Old Granary barn dates back to the 1600s and has been specifically converted for holiday accommodation, comprising four compact yet comfortably furnished properties with many features such as original oak beams and doors, lead light windows and part tiled floor. Most properties have entrances to the communal games room with pool table, table tennis, table football and a large selection of videos and books. This popular part of East Sussex is steeped in history - the 1066 Roman invasion links abound in surrounding areas such as the quaint Cinque port of Rye with cobbled lanes and plentiful antique shops, Hastings renowned for smugglers' caves and Battle with its ancient abbey ruins. There are many National Trust properties and gardens to visit including Batemans, Sissinghurst, Great Dixter, Pashley Manor, Scotney Castle, Sheffield Park, Wakehurst Place, Merrimans, Nymans and the home of Rudyard Kipling is in nearby Burwash. Local attractions nearby make for a good family day out such as the zoo, beaches and seaside entertainment at Rye, Hasting or Eastbourne. Riding and walks in Bedgebury Forest, trips to France from Ashford, the spa town of Tunbridge Wells with the Pantiles and castles at Hertsmonceux, Bodiam, Leeds, Pevensey and Lewis can all be enjoyed neaby. Several golf courses can be easily reached, as can sailing, walking and fishing in the beautiful Bewl Water.
