Middleton Cottage

Freshwater, Isle of Wight.,United Kingdom

Enjoying an enviable location in an AONB, this delightful detached family home partly dates back to 1740, and has been sympathetically refurbished to provide comfortable and tastefully furnished accommodation with a wealth of character features, including wood-burning stoves in inglenook surrounds, beams, terracotta tiled floor, and Victorian roll-top bath. The large enclosed gardens are ideal for families, with a trampoline, summer house and lawns with mature trees, ideal for enjoying barbecues and drinks on warm balmy evenings. Middleton Cottage was once part of The Tennyson Estate, and the area is steeped in history, as Lord Tennyson resided close by in a beautiful country retreat, now The Farringford Hotel. The Tennyson Trail and monument attract many visitors to the island where they can enjoy the extensive walks along stunning Heritage coastline and wonderful local countryside. Also within easy reach are the superb rock formations of The Needles - 100ft pinnacles of chalk which survive as part of the ridge that once joined the Isle of Wight to the mainland. Overlooking the Needles is a fort, Old Needles Battery, restored by the National Trust and which now houses an exhibition of the fort's history. Backed by cliffs renowned for their coloured sands, Alum Bay is also a popular spot for visitors, as well as the horseshoe-shaped Freshwater Bay. For nature lovers, Newtown Creek bird reserve offers a wonderful diversity of habitats within its 800 acres, where around 300 species of plants and 180 species of bird have been recorded. Also worth a visit is the pretty sailing village of Yarmouth, set in the estuary of the River Yar, with its harbour overlooked by a castle built by Henry VIII as part of the coastal defences. Further afield, visitors can discover picturesque villages, vineyards, museums, wildlife centres, Carisbrooke Castle, Calbourne Water Mill, handmade pottery and glass, Ventnor Botanical Gardens, adventure parks and several NT homes.
