 Long's Park Castle
West Ashton, Nr Trowbridge.,United Kingdom
This impressive Grade II listed folly castle stands proudly within its own private grounds, surrounded by trees dating back 500 years! A vibrant history meant that this splendid building fell into many different hands; it exudes an atmosphere of great charm, which lives on long after departure. Enter down a crunching gravel drive through two large automatic gates to the courtyard. Boasting many original features such as beamed ceilings, stone walls, historic fireplaces, mullioned and leaded windows, it also features the latest technology such as digital keyless entry and rooms which automatically light up on entry. The majestic dining hall with vaulted ceiling provides the ideal setting for a medieval banquet - 20 guests can be seated on one long table. The living room/conservatory is ideal for a social group evening, while the drawing room or cosy little study with chess playing set-up, both offer a quiet alternative. The separate games barn in the garden offers pool, darts, air hockey, giant Jenga etc, and - at guests cost - pinball and overhead heating. All bedrooms have four-poster beds, although three of them offer access only from one side, most are en-suite (sink plus shower cubicle only), with intricate tapestry panelling. The west wing's Rapunzel Tower is reached by a very narrow spiral staircase; this little bedroom is adored by children and adults alike. The central turret's open-tread iron staircase leads to the first floor bedrooms, bathroom and tapestry-panelled hallways to East and West Wings. Outside, cream teas can be enjoyed in the Summerhouse or Old Victorian Potting House, and you can wander past the wildlife pond to the orchard, where you can pick your own fruit (Victoria plums and apples when in season). The observatory offers bird-watching and stargazing and there are outstanding views across the hills and fields. Wild deer frequent the castle, and on most days, an ancient herd of cows comes right up to the perimeter fence to drink from the water trough. Walks lead from the castle to the woods and lakes. Set close to the busy A350, with fast access to Stonehenge and the famous White Horse, there are many unspoilt villages nearby. Also within easy reach are Bath, Wells cathedral, Glastonbury, Stourhead Gardens as well as Longleat's boat trips and `hands-on' safari, which is a whole day's outing.
Drawing room with drinks cabinet (no drinks, but lovely crystal decanters), Chesterfield sofas. Large dining hall with full-length bay windows, exposed stonework. Beamed farmhouse-style kitchen with slate floor, rosewood units overlaid with solid granite worktops, large fridge, dishwasher, Aga and two microwaves. Snug/reading room and small library area. Ground floor double bedroom en suite (shower cubicle, basin). Separate W.C. Spiral staircase to first floor: Four double bedrooms, two en suite (shower cubicle, basin). Bathroom/W.C. with slipper bath and over-bath shower. Double bedroom accessed via separate spiral staircase. Second floor: Small observatory. The Clockhouse, just 50 ft away from the castle, offers self-contained accommodation for 4 more guests. It can be booked in conjunction with the castle to sleep 16. Modern fitted kitchen (ideal for outside caterers). Living/dining room (one end is screened off by large wardrobe to conceal double bed - access only one side). Double bedroom with en-suite bathroom/W.C. with mini bath and shower. Its quality and charm must not be likened to the castle and should be seen as it is - small, modern, functional extra accommodation.
