Further south is the remote triangular-shaped Caerlaverock Castle which dates back to 1270, with its mighty gatehouse and moat, and a nearby nature reserve. Amongst the protected salt marsh and mud flats there are many well-situated birdwatchers' hides, which offer the opportunity to catch a glimpse of the rare natterjack toad or one of the thousands of barnacle geese which return in the winter. The nearby Galloway Forest Park is famed for off-road cycling and walking with the Seven Stanes and National Cycle Network also passing nearby. Watersports available at Loch Ken. The Solway Coast has many varied towns with art, craft and antique shops. Throughout this whole area there are great opportunities for walking, golfing, riding and fishing - exclusive salmon and sea trout fishing on private water by arrangement.
