Built in 1812, Toward is the tallest of the 3 Clyde lighthouses built by the Stevenson family. The cottage is joined to the automated light (no access) and has unparalleled views over the Firth of Clyde, including Ayrshire, Cumbrae Islands, Ailsa Craig, Arran, Bute. Spectacular sunrises, sunsets and occasional storms provide natural variety to the presiding peace. Excellent regular bird spotting, seal observation and occasional glimpses of red squirrels and dolphins occur without leaving the garden. Many ships pass nearby including the paddle-steamer Waverley on its daily summer cruises. Trips to Argyll and Loch Lomond National Park (12 miles), Ben More Arboretum (10 miles) and the many picturesquely sited good restaurants and pubs (nearest 3 miles). Hire of bikes (Dunoon) and boats (Coylet, Loch Eck).
