Ardmaddy Castle, Nr Oban, Argyll.,United Kingdom
"Shades of the Campbells and MacDougalls - a castle standing guard over Seil Sound . . ."
Ardmaddy, once a MacDougall castle, was acquired by the Campbells of Breadalbane in the late 17th-century to form the western bastion of their estates, which at that time extended as far east as Taymouth Castle in Perthshire. This magnificent defensive position grants today's (more peaceable) visitors an outstanding location - on the sea and amongst the unspoilt hills and glens of a quiet peninsula overlooking Seil Sound, about 12miles south of Oban. The estate offers a wealth of attractions. Sailing, rowing and motor boats are all available for hire, and there is free fishing on Ardmaddy's stocked hill lochs (by boat or from the shore). The Castle's magnificent gardens feature an extensive variety of rhododendrons and unusual trees and shrubs, whilst the surrounding 3,000acres of grounds offer superb hill walking and are aparadise for bird-watchers and wildlife enthusiasts. There is a games room for visitors' use with darts, a small snooker table and table tennis, whilst Caddleton Farmhouse and The Stables have their own games rooms. There is also shared use of the Castle's hard tennis court. Riding and golf are both within half an hour's drive, and the area is perfect for touring, with miles of interesting coastline. The famous `Bridge over the Atlantic' links Seil Island to the mainland, there are gardens nearby at An Cala, and castles to visit including Carnasserie and Dunadd hill-fort, with its impressive strategic position and magnificent views. Nearby Arduaine Gardens enjoy an idyllic lochside location, with pristine lawns, lily-strewn ponds, mature woods and spectacular rhododendrons and azaleas. There is a pub/restaurant 2½miles away; and Oban, only 12miles, boasts a wide choice of shops, bars and restaurants, and has a delightful harbour with regular boat trips to the islands. In and around Oban there are many other attractions for all the family, including the Oban Rare Breeds Farm Park and the Oban Sea Life Centre. Nearby Inveraray also offers several museums, the Argyll Wildlife Park, Inveraray Jail (now a museum) and Inverary Castle, which boasts extensive grounds. Highly graded by the Tourist Board, these four cottages and Caddleton Farmhouse on opposite page (property reference UNP) are beautifully furnished, decorated and equipped. Although not isolated, they are set in secluded, peaceful locations on the estate, offering comfortable and spacious accommodation in a setting ideal for a relaxing holiday. Visitors to Ardmaddy can be sure of a warm personal welcome from the Struthers, who are happy to provide fresh fruit and vegetables (in season) from their walled garden.
