With beautiful views over the Galloway Hills from nearly every room, this detached, 18th-century family house is set in an acre of colourful gardens, with access to a further 50acres of fields. Sympathetically refurbished, it is wonderfully light and spacious, and extremely comfortable. A family home, it is decorated to a very high standard throughout and beautifully furnished with some antiques, and even a baby grand piano. A covered walkway leads from the back door to a comfortable games room, complete with easy chairs and open fire. Converted from a former stable and hayloft, it now provides a pleasant place to unwind, with snooker, table tennis and darts. The garden has a hard tennis court set by a stream, and plenty of space to enjoy a stroll or relax with a good book. Bellrigg makes a superb base for outdoor family holidays, and a convenient centre from which to explore the Solway coast and the Galloway countryside. To the north, Loch Ken offers plenty of water sports, including canoeing, sailing and windsurfing, as well as good fishing and birdwatching. Salmon and trout fishing are also available on local rivers and lochs. To the south, the Solway coast promises sandy beaches, lovely walks and horse riding. Just 3miles away Castle Douglas offers good shops, hotels, restaurants and a theatre, as well as an 18-hole golf course, with a further 9-hole course at Gatehouse of Fleet (12miles). Nearby is beautiful Threave Gardens (NTS) and, set on an island in the River Dee, is the ruined 14th-century stronghold of Threave Castle. Kirkcudbright (7miles) has an excellent golf course, and is a centre for artists, boasting a splendid castle and the Stewartry Museum, as well as day trips on a fishing vessel. Cinema and theatre at Dumfries (17miles).
