Situated just 3miles from Achiltibuie, it is located on the Coigach Peninsula, with excellent walking to the huge Ben More Coigach - rising up nearly 2500ft and dominating the skyline. As the main settlement on the peninsula, Achiltibuie started out as a crofting village, but now attracts a good number of holiday makers, many visiting the almost futuristic structure of the Hydroponicum (open Easter til Sept), which cultivates exotic plants, fruit and flowers. Produce grown here can be sampled at its Lily Pond Café and the Summer Isles Hotel. Also of gastronomic interest is the Achiltibuie Smokehouse situated a few miles from the Hydroponicum, where traditional methods of smoking food can be seen and where the meat, fish and game can be bought afterwards. Founded at the height of the herring boom at the end of the eighteenth century, the popular holiday centre of Ullapool lies 25miles distant, jutting out into Loch Broom, the longest sea loch in the north-west Highlands. Despite the collapse of the herring industry a 100years later, Ullapool has continued to flourish, with sea-angling for whiting and skate proving popular, along with salmon and trout fishing in the Ullapool River and nearby lochs. Several hiking trails begin here, catering for all abilities and ranging from shore side walks to strenuous ascents; whilst mountain biking is also enjoyed by many. Trips to the Summer Isles - a cluster of uninhabited islets offshore - can be taken from here and from Bardentarbet to view the dolphins and porpoises. Trout, salmon and deep-sea fishing is available just 3miles from the property, with sandy beaches, ˝mile and 6miles.
