Originally built in 1831 as a courthouse and a school for the locality, Court House and Charlies Cottage are close to the village centre with St Ruadhans Abbey, the most famous of the Munster monastries, opposite. Fully renovated yet retaining much of their original character the cottages are surrounded by countryside dotted with abbeys, castles and country houses and gardens, and are well placed for touring Ireland. The village of Lorrha is set in an ancient monastic settlement founded in the 6th century, and boasts some of the finest mason skills seen in Ireland today. Countryside pursuits include bird watching, rambling, painting and photography. Horse riding and pony trekking can be enjoyed nearby, as well as golf. Lough Derg offers a variety of watersports and fishing. Galway, Limerick and Kilkenny make good day trips, and The Burren, Banratty Castle, Clonmacnoise and west Offaly Railway, Glendeer Visitor Farm and numerous other attractions are within 20 miles. Shop and pub 300 yards, restaurant 3 miles.
