Monkstadt became the seat of the Clan Macdonald in 1730 when they abandoned Duntulm Castle.
Nearby are servants' houses and a steading which includes a granary stable, cartshed and a mill with horse walk. Monkstadt has played a romantic role in highland history. The mainhouse of Monkstadt is now a ruin however the steading has been renovated and the stables and Granary have been sympathetically converted into first class holiday accommodation.
