Dolphin Cottage, Sea View Terrace, Portmellon Hill, Mevagissey, Cornwall, South West
Description of Dolphin CottageDolphin Cottage is right on the edge of the sea in Portmellon Cove. It is a charming and romantic cottage ideal for two to hide away.
Amazing proximity to seaside and cliff walks. The sea is just outside every window (sand at low tide) and there is a good local pub just down the road! The beach is within 30 yards. Small terrace by front door. Wifi, open fireplace. Mevagissey a short walk away.
Well behaved dogs are very welcome.
Dolphin Cottage is a pretty, three storey cottage at the end of the historic terrace known as Sea View Cottages, which overlooks the cove on the eastward side of Portmellon.
From every room the sea (or sand, at low tide) is within a few feet of the window. From the front door to the beach slipway is about 30 yards.
There is wifi, electric (night storage) heating and hot water. It is newly decorated and carpeted.
The entrance is on Portmellon Hill, which leads up towards Mevagissey. There is a pull in space near the entrance gate where it is possible to stop to unload, but parking is either in the public carpark by the beach, or on Portmellon Park both about 50 yards away.
Through a gate, down a few steps and along the communal walkway that leads to five cottages, Dolphin cottage is the first and has dual a aspect looking over the cove in two directions.
Outside the front door there is a small outdoor space with bench and space for a barbeque. Lovely view over the wall opposite, to the sea and rocky pools below. Honeysuckle by the glazed door.
The front door opens into a sitting room, with a small open fireplace (working), three seater sofa, armchair, coffee table, TV and DVD player. Large rug over vinyl flooring.
Up the stairs with fitted slate blue carpet is a second sitting room with double sofa (bed), armchair and folding circular dining table and chairs for four.
On the other side of the stairway is a brightly painted kitchen with fitted units, electric cooker, fridge freezer, microwave, spin dryer. Windows over cove, beach entrance and the lovely wooded valley inland. Vinyl flooring.
Upstairs on the third floor is a romantically styled double bedroom with window overlooking the cove, double bed with wrought iron headboard and pine chest of drawers. Fitted hand basin and mirror to corner.
Across the stairs, the bathroom has bath (shower over), WC and pedestal sink. Range of fitted cupboards containing immersion heater for hot water. There is another delightful sea view to brush your teeth to and also from the bath tub!
This is a lovely place at anytime of the year. It is high up enough to watch the winter sea from above! In spring and summer the atmosphere is of old fashioned beach hols.
The sofa bed may be used as a second bed, but we think that the small size of the cottage means that it is not really a practical idea.

Getting HerePortmellon Cove is half way down the south coast of Cornwall, near the fishing village of Mevagissey and a couple of miles east of Gorran Haven.
When the tide is in the sea comes up to the seawall and it's lovely to swim or kayak from the slipway. Sometimes boats are launched by crane.
When the tide is out there's quite a large beach with fine sand, bordered on both sides by barnacled rocks. It has safe swimming and during the winter months dogs are welcome (but they are not allowed on the beach from June to September). It has an old fashioned feel with opportunities to investigate rock pools at low tide or hidden coves nearby in a kayak.
In winter the weather can be magnificently impressive, sending great waves crashing across the road. Then Dolphin Cottage or the Rising Sun pub are good vantage points! A good local website for more info is www.portmellon.net.
Mevagissey is less than a mile over the hill. Here there are lots of shops selling all sorts of things from pirate outfits to fillet steak. Several restaurants and pubs. Amongst the tasty food options are a Portueguese restaurant, Fish grill bar and the fresh fish caravan on the quay that sells catch from the boats (& local scallops 60p).
Nice walk and lunch options are up Portmellon valley through woods to The Barley Sheaf pub in Gorran Churchtown (ancient church, see Pevsner) or alternatively, lunch at Heligan Gardens going through Mevagissey and up another unspoiled woodland valley.
The nearest train station is 6 miles away at St Austell. There is a bus service to Mevagissey. The nearest airport is Newquay 20 miles away.
