The largest and most northerly island in the Inner Hebrides is dominated by the Cuillin Hills. The soft white sandy beaches of Skye contrast with the beautiful craggy Cuillin Ridge and the Five Sisters of Kintail. Portree, the largest settlement on Skye, is known for its picturesque harbour and is often the first stop for new visitors. Once accessible only by ferry, the opening of the Skye Bridge in 1995 allowed road traffic to continue its journey to the island along the A87, from the Kyle of Lochalsh on the Scottish mainland through to the west coast of Skye.

Things to do in the Isle of Skye

Skye has much to offer both the walker and the naturalist, with beautiful hills and lochs, inlets and coastline, populated by corncrakes, puffins and sea eagles, as well as abundant species of fish. A diverse range of boat trips enable visitors to discover the wildlife, heritage and outdoor activities available on the island: go whale-watching or dolphin-spotting, observe the colonies of seabirds, seals or sea eagles, or learn more about the rich cultural history of the island with sunset stories afloat. Climbing, cycling, sailing, diving and kayaking are just some of the more physical options available to the more adventurous visitor.

There is also a strong folk music tradition on Skye. Gaelic folk heroes Runrig started off here and members of the group still retain links with the island. Impromptu gigs and amateur music sessions are a particular attraction for enthusiasts of all musical persuasions.

    Top Destinations

Carbost – Just beyond this small crafting settlement, on the shores of Loch Harport, the Talisker Distillery produces a fine single malt whisky, and is open to the public for its highly popular tasting tours.

Armadale – Less than a mile from the Mallaig ferry and the site of the ruined Armadale Castle, the lush gardens are open to the public, and are adjacent to the Museum of the Isles.

Dunvegan – The historic Dunvegan Castle offers the visitor both stunning interiors and glorious outdoor surroundings; the Castle is perched high above the shores of Loch Dunvegan, whilst inland lie carefully landscaped gardens and beautiful woodland.

Portree – The largest town on the island is surrounded by cliffs, and hosts a pier designed by the civil engineer Thomas Telford.  At the Aros Centre on the outskirts of town a unique RSPB exhibition focuses on majestic sea eagles; the Centre also houses an excellent bookshop, art and gift shop, and restaurant, as well as meeting all your essential regional requirements for kilt hiring!

Kilmuir – Since 1965 the Museum of Island Life has worked to ensure that a township of traditional thatched cottages is preserved, to show visitors the different types of dwellings which were once typical on Skye.

Sligachan – The Cuillin microbrewery opened its doors in 2004 and currently produces four specialist ales using water drawn from the local river; the beverages are usually available to sample in the bars of the local Hotel.

Broadford – The Skye Serpentarium houses a collection of rescued reptiles and amphibians. There are currently over 50 animals on display, including White’s tree frogs and large green iguanas.

Ellishadder – The Staffin Museum contains a varied collection of local geological and dinosaur fossil specimens, together with other fascinating prehistoric artefacts.
