Monument Cottage is located in 88 acres of highly picturesque deciduous woodland surroundings. The beautiful setting is not only pleasing to the eye but is steeped history too. The surrounding environment is rich in wildlife making the setting ideal for nature lovers, outdoor activity enthusiasts and history lovers alike. The woodland environment changes throughout the seasons and each season brings its own beauty. The Cottage is located by the village of Monikie 3 miles inland from the Firth of the Tay and its wonderful waterfront panorama. The immediate area is steeped in history principally revolving round the ancient monument of the Camus cross(dated 1010) and the Panmure testimonial. Monikie Country Park is visible from the cottage and offers beautiful grounds, walks, play areas, fishing and water sports. Carnoustie, venue of the 1999 Open Golf Championship lies 10 minutes drive to the south east, alongside several other well-regarded local golf courses, many of championship qualifying standard. In addition St Andrews, the home of golf is 30 – 45 minutes drive. Dundee, Scotland’s fourth city is easily accessed and offers service, facilities and amenities expected of a city of its size and is a city rich in cultural heritage. Glamis Castle - family home of the Earls of Strathmore, childhood home of the Queen Mother and legendary setting for Shakespear's famous play 'MacBeth'. The Angus Glens 15 to 20 miles to the northwest possess some of Scotland’s finest grouse moors, deer forests and spectacular walks. For the keen fisherman, there is salmon fishing on the rivers Tay, North Esk and South Esk, nearer to home is Kingennie fishings offering Fly-fishing and Coarse fishing. Arbroath, the largest town in Angus is the location of Arbroath Abbey, where the declaration of independance was signed, expressing the desire of the Scottish people for self-determination. The popular culinary delight the Arbroath smokie is made in this picturesque fishing port . Surrounding the area are restaurants to suit all tastes and wallets! The Craigton coaching Inn is within walking distance and is fine for family dining. Broughty Ferry boasts several restaurants offering a variety - from local dishes to Indian and Chinese meals. Many of the larger hotels in the area also offer good restaurant food. Broughty Ferry is also home to Broughty Ferry Castle, some fantastic walks along the coast as well as varied, quality shopping. Slightly further afield (approx 20 mins) is the But n Ben restaurant (Featured on the recent BBC “Coast” program) in the village of Auchmithie, renowned for its fresh fish and dessert trolley! For beach lovers there are a number of good beaches, both sandy and rocky giving great walks and hours of pleasure for the youngsters.
