The largest and most northerly island in the Inner Hebrides is dominated by the Cuillin Hills. The soft white sandy beaches of Skye contrast with the beautiful craggy Cuillin Ridge and the Five Sisters of Kintail. Portree, the largest settlement on Skye, is known for its picturesque harbour and is often the first stop for new visitors. Once accessible only by ferry, the opening of the Skye Bridge in 1995 allowed road traffic to continue its journey to the island along the A87, from the Kyle of Lochalsh on the Scottish mainland through to the west coast of Skye.
Things to do in the Isle of Skye
Skye has much to offer both the walker and the naturalist, with beautiful hills and lochs, inlets and coastline, populated by corncrakes, puffins and sea eagles, as well as abundant species of fish. A diverse range of boat trips enable visitors to discover the wildlife, heritage and outdoor activities available on the island: go whale-watching or dolphin-spotting, observe the colonies of seabirds, seals or sea eagles, or learn more about the rich cultural history of the island with sunset stories afloat. Climbing, cycling, sailing, diving and kayaking are just some of the more physical options available to the more adventurous visitor.
There is also a strong folk music tradition on Skye. Gaelic folk heroes Runrig started off here and members of the group still retain links with the island. Impromptu gigs and amateur music sessions are a particular attraction for enthusiasts of all musical persuasions.
